{"id":5599,"date":"2016-04-18T17:55:39","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T15:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewineplace.es\/?p=5599"},"modified":"2017-07-12T13:51:59","modified_gmt":"2017-07-12T11:51:59","slug":"what-is-gruner-veltliner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markoneill.es\/en\/what-is-gruner-veltliner","title":{"rendered":"What is Gr\u00fcner Veltliner?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Austria, home Mozart, Strauss and Schubert, Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, philosophers Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper is also the home of a grape variety that makes some of the finest food wines in the world, Gr\u00fcner Veltliner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gr\u00fcner Veltliner makes white wine that taste like the sound of the Von Trapp family.\u00a0 Fresh lemon aromas and a hint of peach.\u00a0 They are crisp yet savoury with citrus flavours and slightly hint of minerals.\u00a0 It also has a streak of natural acidity, which\u00a0 is key because it forms the structure or skeleton of a wine on which everything else is held together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is the most versatile wines and when combining Gr\u00fcner Veltiner with food the world is your oyster &#8211; or any other shellfish.\u00a0 It has the richness to accompany an array of rice dishes as well as grilled sausage with a lemony cream sauce, \u2018wiener schnitzel\u2019, typical in Austria. It is also perfect to go with salads and grilled vegetables or as an aperitif on its own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gr\u00fcner is now quite a trendy wine to be found on the best wine lists around the world.\u00a0 If you like Godello or Albari\u00f1o you will love Gr\u00fcner Veltliner. It is also an good alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The finest examples Gr\u00fcner Veltliner come from the <b>Wachau<\/b>, hilly region with limestone and granite soils, <b>Kremstal<\/b>, where the vineyards rise above the Danube river and <b>Kamptal<\/b>, along the river Kamp.\u00a0 Top producers to look out for F.X. Pichler, Brundlmayer, Hirsh, Nigl also Frei Weingartner Wachau, one of the best cooperatives in Austria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Top Austrian wines, particularly from the Wachau, do not come cheap but don\u2019t let that put you off trying one.\u00a0 I recently tasted a selection of Austrian wines at Prowein, a huge wine fair held in Germany every March,\u00a0 I found a couple of real gems that are very good value for money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Firstly, the wines from <b>Weingut Zuschmann -Schofmann<\/b> in the <b>Weinviertal DAC, <\/b>which means wine growing region.\u00a0 These are the flatlands near Vienna.\u00a0 Wife and Husband team of Else Zuschmann and Peter Schofmann make wines that are crisp with floral and mineral flavours, excellent value for money.\u00a0 Their vineyards are biodynamic as are those of <b>Johannes Tapl <\/b>of <b>Weingut Trapl<\/b> in the <b>Carnuntum <\/b>a small area<b> <\/b>40km south east of Vienna.\u00a0 Here the vineyards are made up of stoney limestone, gravel, clay soil and benefit from the warm Pannonian microclimate and cool breezes from the nearby Danube river.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally a word about Austrian wine classification.\u00a0 It is similar to that in Germany where the wines are classified by degrees of ripeness or natural sugar at time of picking. Starting from Trocken (dry), Kabinett (off dry), Spatlese (slightly sweet), Auslese (sweeter) it goes on up to wonderful sweet wines known as Trockenbeerenauslese.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So add Gr\u00fcner Veltliner to you list of wines that you have to try, you won\u2019t be disappointed but choose a recommended winery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austria, home Mozart, Strauss and Schubert, Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, philosophers Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper is also the home of a grape variety that makes some of the finest food wines in the world, Gr\u00fcner Veltliner.
