The hysteria that surrounds a wine receiving a <a href=\"https:\/\/markoneill.es\/en\/what-are-parker-points\">Parker score<\/a> in the high 90\u2019s is the wine equivalent of winning the lottery. The \u20ac300 billion global industry is hugely influenced by the opinions of one person and his team. The reputations of top wineries can be made or broken depending on the scores received.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So who is Parker and what are Parker Points and why are they so influential in the world of wine?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Robert Parker is an American lawyer turned wine critic who founded a bimonthly newsletter called\u00a0 Wine Advocate in the 1970\u2019s giving his personal opinion and rating of the wines he tasted.\u00a0 As the number of subscribers grew so did his influence particularly in the American market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an interview he said that he tasted 10,000 wines a year which amounts to 350,000 spanning his 25 year career as a critic.\u00a0 His nose was reported to be insured for $1million!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He developed his own points system, rating wines out of a 100 point scale, which actually starts at 50, that today is generally considered the standard scale by which wines are judged, although it is not without its critics:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>50-59 <\/strong>&#8211; \u00a0undrinkable<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>60-69<\/strong> &#8211; Flawed but drinkable<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>70-79<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; Average, correct but not interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>80-89<\/strong> &#8211; above average to very good<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>90-95<\/strong> &#8211; Outstanding<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>96-100<\/strong> &#8211; Extraordinary<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wine scores are given based on quality and style that reflects the region from where the wine is from.\u00a0 That means that you could buy two wines with the same score yet they taste completely different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You should always bear in mind that wine tasting and evaluation is subjective and wines evolve and change over time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Due to the success and influence of the Robert Parker and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertparker.com\/\">Wine Advocate<\/a> many winemakers and winery owners focussed their efforts to make wines that would appeal to Parker.\u00a0 This resulted in tendency to make \u2018Parker\u2019 wines.\u00a0 In fact I have heard that there are contracts between winery owners and winemakers that include large bonuses if 90+ scores are achieved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Robert Parker, while being the most influential, is not the only influential international wine critic.\u00a0 Jancis Robinson, Steve Tanzer, James Suckling are also very influential along with the magazines the Wine Spectator and Decanter.\u00a0 Each one has their own systems and ways of scoring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a relatively new venture called Vinous, founded by former investment banker and Parker protege Antonio Galloni, that aims to replace the Wine Advocate as the new \u2018standard\u2019 in wine criticism.\u00a0 Time will tell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the years I have found Parkers ratings to be consistent, that is not to say that I agree with many of the evaluations. I am not a fun of overly powerful fruit bombs.
